If there is evidence for god why do people need faith?

Why do you think a god, who wants his creations to accept and love him, would prefer we rely on faith that he exists rather than provide evidence for his existence. If god is all knowing he should know exactly what every individual needs to believe in him, and if he is all powerful, he could provide that evidence. Why would he choose not to, considering that would result in more people going to hell just because they genuinely believed there was no evidence for god? Demonstrating his existence wouldnt inhibit our free will, our ability to choose to accept and love him. love isnt so much a choice, its a feeling. you either love someone or you dont, but if there very existence is debatable it doesnt foster the best conditions for genuine love.
